Pericardial vs Pleural Effusion

February 8, 2018 Mark Magee

Pericardial Effusion

  1. Crosses the mid line
  2. Separates descending aorta from pericardium
  3. Beware tamponade physiology

Pleural Effusion

  1. Accumulates posterolateral to the descending aorta
  2. Typically, not present in the subxyphoid view given no pleural reflection between the liver & heart
Use multiple views to differentiate.
